sqsl Astral offers a distinctive approach to MIDI control by transforming the iPad into a conceptual instrument inspired by the night sky. Its full-screen interface ensures an immersive experience, allowing users to engage deeply with its visual layout.
The app features a "Pitch Class Inversion" quantizer complemented by five readily accessible pitch presets, facilitating quick tonal adjustments. Notes distributed across the interface are arranged into three sections, each customizable in density, octave range, velocity, and MIDI channel assignment, providing flexible sound shaping options.
Furthermore, each section can transmit MIDI data to multiple channels, with configurations for rotating or random selection, enhancing its versatility for live and studio applications. Users can also save note configurations with quantizer settings into 5x49 preset slots for efficient recall and session management.
Operational notes include that Astral functions exclusively in full-screen mode; controls for switching presets or accessing settings are revealed via swipe gestures from the screen's edges. It should be noted that Astral generates MIDI messages without native sound production and is designed as a standalone application, not compatible as an AUv3 plugin within other hosts.
